Choosing a Domain Name for Your Real Estate Website

How Canadian REALTORS® can pick a memorable, brandable domain, .ca vs .com, and how to connect it to a real estate website.

Your name or your market?

Most agents choose between a personal-brand domain (janedoe.ca) and a market domain (calgaryhomesearch.ca). A personal domain moves with you if you change brokerages; a market domain can help with local relevance. Many agents own both and point one at the other.

.ca or .com?

For Canadian clients, .ca signals that you are local and is often easier to get. If your .com is available, register it too and redirect it so nobody else can take it.

  • Keep it short and easy to spell over the phone.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers where possible.
  • Check your board's advertising rules if you use 'realtor' in the name.

Connecting the domain

With NexusIDX you start on a free yourname.nexusidx.com address. When you are ready, add your domain in the dashboard and create one DNS record (a CNAME for www) at your registrar. Security certificates are issued automatically and your free address redirects to your new domain so search engines consolidate on one URL.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. CREA and your real estate board set the rules for MLS® data use.
